Arrival in Italy

In the late 1500s, the first small quantities of coffee began to trickle into Italy, via a group of students from Padua University. They were probably the students of Prospero Alpino, the author of De plantis aegypty, a treatise on the North African plants he discovered during his brief stay with the Italian consul there. In 1624 and 1650 large batches were shipped to Venice and Marseille.

Food or Beverage?

The ancestors of the Galla nomadic tribe used coffee berries as food: the seeds and fruit were blended together with animal fat and used as sustenance during their long desert crossings.
Sometimes later, the beverage was prepared as an infusion by leaving the whole fruit (called kisher) to steep in cold water. Subsequently, the fruit was removed, and the green beans (bounya) were used. Then a decoction was tried by boiling the green beans. It was only in the thirteenth century that, by pure chance, the Arabs came across the technique of “toasting” coffee.
The very first coffee houses (kahwe khaneh) were opened in southern Arabia and, in the early sixteenth century, and consumption began to spread to the cities of Cairo and Mecca, until it reached Constantinople in 1555, thanks to two Syrian businessmen.

In 1671, Fausto Naironi, a Maronite monk, dedicated a treatise to coffee, in which he recounted the story of a young Ethiopian shepherd, named Kaldi, who lived in the 6th century. Kaldi discovered the stimulating, invigorating properties of the “bright red berries on a shiny green shrub” thanks to his goats. In the mid-nineteenth century, the missionary Johann Krapf loved to recount the role of the civet, a slender feline descending from the mongoose. The animal was a glutton for coffee berries, and left the undigested seeds along its path, which was said to strecth from Central Africa, all the way to Ethiopia.

The origins of coffee are shrouded in mystery and are recounted with quaint anecdotes, myths and conjuctures. Its countless narrators all agree on one thing: its provenance. In fact, the various versions all state that the coffee shrub first took root in the Kaffa region in the highlands of today’s Ethiopia.
The word “coffee”, which was inspired by its energy giving properties, derives from the Arab word qahwa, meaning a plant based beverage.
