In the late 1500s, the first small quantities of coffee began to trickle into Italy, via a group of students from Padua University. They were probably the students of Prospero Alpino, the author of De plantis aegypty, a treatise on the North African plants he discovered during his brief stay with the Italian consul there. In 1624 and 1650 large batches were shipped to Venice and Marseille.
